Retirement abroad, in numbers

Four countries. Your numbers. One straight answer.

A hand-built calculation of whether your retirement income and savings actually clear the visa, tax and health-insurance requirements in Mexico, Spain, Portugal and Panama — with a source and a date next to every figure.

The gap this fills

Cost-of-living calculators answer a different question.

They tell you what an apartment and a coffee cost. That is not the question that decides whether you can go.

  • Mexico's residency threshold is calculated from UMA, and income and savings cannot be combined — it is one route or the other.
  • Spain's non-lucrative visa asks €2,400 a month for one person — and the required amount doubles at the first renewal, because the funds must cover a two-year period.
  • Portugal's threshold is tied to the minimum wage, so it moves every year, automatically.
  • Panama's Pensionado counts Social Security toward its $1,000 requirement — but the arithmetic then moves to health cover and taxes.

None of that is secret. All of it is published. Almost none of it is assembled against one person's actual numbers.

What you get

A written report, built by hand from what you send, in seven parts.

  1. Your inputs — benefit amount, savings, household, current health cover.
  2. Threshold check, country by country — clears, borderline, or does not clear; which route applies (income or savings), whether they can be combined, and whether ownership or other conditions change the bar. Panama, for one, lowers its threshold for property owners.
  3. The delta — how far short, or how much clears the bar, in dollars.
  4. The real monthly cost — health insurance at your age bracket, tax treatment of retirement income, baseline housing.
  5. Currency stress test — what your arithmetic looks like if the dollar drops 15%.
  6. Failure points — renewal doubling, consulate-to-consulate variation, rules with an expiry date on them.
  7. The verdict — clears, borderline, or does not clear, and the specific number that would have to change.

After you order we send a short questionnaire. Your report is delivered within 14 days of receiving your numbers.

What this is not

Arithmetic, not advice.

We are not immigration lawyers, tax advisors or financial advisors, and this is not advice to file for anything.

It is arithmetic: your figures placed against published official requirements, with the source and the date it was checked shown for every number. What you do with the result is your decision, and worth taking to a professional in the country you pick.

Why monitoring exists

These rules do not sit still.

In 2026 alone:

  • Mexico moved its calculation base to UMA rather than the minimum wage.
  • Portugal passed Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026, in force from 19 May 2026, extending the residency period before citizenship.
  • Costa Rica — a country on many of the same shortlists — let its pensionado tax and customs incentives run out in July 2026.

Monitoring is $12 a month, billed only once your report is delivered. When a threshold, tax rule or exchange rate moves in one of the countries on your shortlist, your arithmetic is re-run and you get the new numbers — not a newsletter, your figures.
